Top 5 Weird Facts About Saturn

Every planet in the solar system has their own strange and weird facts, and in this article, we will take a look at what makes Saturn unique. Some of these things you might have known before, while others may be if a surprise.

Saturn Could Float On Water

Saturn is one of the lightest planets in our solar system, as it is mostly made of gas. Therefore; it has been theorized that if you filled a gas tub up with water, and fit Saturn inside it, the planet would float. It turns out that it would not necessarily be practical for this to happen and extremely unlikely. It is unlikely that you would even find a bathtub that big, and some have written how this wouldn’t be possible.

Saturns Rings Are Disappearing

Saturn’s rings are thought to be pieces of comets, asteroids, or shattered moons that broke up before they reached the planet, torn apart by Saturn’s powerful gravity. They are made of billions of small chunks of ice and rock coated with other materials such as dust. This has also led to the thought that in several million years, the rings of Saturn that we are all accustom to seeing will disappear and be absorbed by the planet, as the material in the rings fall into the planet’s atmosphere.

It rains diamonds on Saturn

If true, one day in the future, you would travel to Saturn for a diamond as scientists say that 1,000 tons of diamonds are created yearly. Through a process starting in the atmosphere, the process involves gasses, lightning, and the planets core, Saturn produces diamonds as large as 1 centimeter in diameter.

Saturn Has a Great White Spot

Like Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, Saturn has a large weather event that is described by its color and is visible with telescopes. The Great White Spot are a great white spot periodic storms that are characterized by their white appearance. The spots can be several thousands of kilometers wide, and occur on a semi periodic schedule intervals of 28.5-years. This coincides and corresponds with when Saturn’s northern hemisphere tilts most toward the Sun. Theories on why this happens include massive atmospheric upwellings were caused by thermal instability and seasonal cooling.

Saturn Generates Its Own Radio Waves

Discovered by the Cassini spacecraft, the planet emits radio waves that have scientists stumped. These radio waves are inaudible to the human ear, but if humans could hear these radio waves, they would sound sort of like spinning air raid siren and vary with each rotation of the planet. Because the radio waves from the Northern and Southern hemispheres differ, scientists may need to change the way they measure how long it takes for a year to pass. Moreover, the planets rotation controls the signal variations; which means that the signals will change over time. These changes were determined to be closely synchronized with the seasons experienced on the planet!
