The Supermoon Of May 25th

Every year, there seem to be several supermoon that are visible in the sky! 2021 has 2 supermoons, which are in April and May, but the May event is special for several reasons!

This Supermoon coincides with a total lunar eclipse in some areas, which means that it will take on a reddish hue during the eclipse’s maximum. In other words, it will be a “blood moon.” The total lunar eclipse is on May 26th, 2021, so right after the Supermoon, there is an eclipse!

Moreover, what makes this Supermoon on May 25th, 2021 special is that at 7 pm PDT, the moon will arrive at its closest point to the Earth since 2011. This is 100 miles closer to the Earth than the Supermoon of April 2021!

At this time, the moon will have a perigee distance of 222,022 miles away.

The near coincidence of the full moon with perigee will result in a dramatically large range of high and low ocean tides. Any coastal storm at sea around this time will almost certainly aggravate coastal flooding problems. Such an extreme tide is known as a perigean spring tide, the word spring being derived from the German springen — to “spring up,” which is not a reference to the spring season.
