The Hunter’s Moon Of October

Lunar Calendars Moons

Being the first full month of Fall, October is a time of harvest and fall colors, which is certainly true for the Moon. It is a great time to be a hunter, whether it be for vegetables or for animals, which can be a reason for the Hunter’s Moon name. There are 2 meteor showers this month, the Orionids Meteor Shower and the Draconids Meteor Shower, which are nice sights for an early evening sight. This time of year gets cold but provides great apples and other harvests in the Pacific Northwest, so keep observing and make sure to look up!

Meaning Behind The Name

For some years, the October Full Moon might be noted as the Harvest Moon. The full moon nearest the autumn equinox is named the Harvest Moon, which this year happens to be the September full moon. The moon rises just after sunset and sets around sunrise, so this is the only night in the month when the Moon is in the sky all night long.

Some Native American tribes referred to October’s Moon as the Full Hunter’s Moon as it was the time to go hunting in preparation for winter. October is typically the last month of the year for crop harvest before the winter. Therefore, it is crucial to utilize this time to acquire as much crop as possible. Winter is a time when one lives off of the crops that have been harvested in the Fall. With the moon being in the sky all night, it allows for maximum harvesting.

This full Moon is also called the “Travel Moon” and the “Dying Grass Moon.” This denotes that the grass might start dying soon and that that it might be time to travel to winter grounds. Other explanations could be that animals could be using this time to travel as well.
