As discussed in a previous article on the subject, a blue moon is “either the third of four full moons in a season, or a second full moon in a month of the common calendar.” The last blue moon to occur was a seasonal blue moon that occurred on August 19th, 2024.
The May 31st, 2026 full moon is technically a monthly blue moon, since the first full moon of May 2026 will occur on the 1st. What is interesting is that this monthly blue moon is the less traditional definition of a blue moon, but it has become the most commonly quoted.
What is interesting is that the next monthly blue moon will occur on December 31st, 2028, and the next seasonal blue moon being May 20th, 2027. And although rare, it is indeed possible for both types of blue moons (seasonal and monthly) to align for the same full moon. The next time this will happen is 2048, with the monthly Blue moon occurring on January 31st, and a seasonal Blue Moon on August 23. 2067 will see this happen again with the monthly blue moon being March 30th, and the seasonal Blue Moon on November 20th.
For those living in the Pacific Northwest, this blue moon will be visible low on the horizon, as it will rise at 00:08 and set at 07:54. So make sure that you have a clear view of the entire southern sky!
