The Beaver Moon of November

Named after the Beaver; the Full Beaver Moon of November is the time of the year that beavers are preparing for the winter. Therefore, hunters use this time to prepare the last beaver traps of the year before winter set in. As the days get shorter in November, the weather will also start to get cloudier making it harder to view the stars.

As beavers are nocturnal animals, they use the light to continue building their dams and other structures using wood and mud. Some cultures had different names for the November Full Moon, but those alternatives have been used to name other full moons.

Fun Fact: The Oregon State University mascot is a Beaver as the team calls themselves the Beavers. This isn’t necessarily related to the full moon, but can show the role that beavers played in the life of those in the Pacific Northwest.
