July 5 – Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

Penumbral Lunar Eclipse Lunar Calendars

As mentioned in the moon phases article, a penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth’s partial shadow, or penumbra. During this type of eclipse the Moon will darken slightly but not completely.

The eclipse will be visible throughout most of North America, South America, the eastern Pacific Ocean, the western Atlantic Ocean, and extreme western Africa. The entire eclipse will not be entirely visible in the Pacific Northwest as the area will only receive a partial lunar eclipse. Information about the different types of lunar eclipses can be found here.

The magnitude of the eclipse is -0.644.
The penumbral magnitude of the eclipse is 0.354.
The total duration of the eclipse is 2 hours, 45 minutes.
