  1. Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park

Located in western Colorado, the park contains 12 of the 48 mile long Black Canyon of the Gunnison River. The national park itself contains the deepest and most dramatic section of the canyon, but the canyon continues upstream into Curecanti National Recreation Area and downstream into Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area. The canyon’s name owes itself to the fact that parts of the gorge only receive 33 minutes of sunlight a day.

The park conserves an area of large sand dunes up to 750 feet in height in Colorado. The park was originally designated Great Sand Dunes National Monument on March 17, 1932, by President Herbert Hoover with the boundaries protecting 35,528 acres of land. The park now encompasses 107,342 acres, which include the tallest sand dunes in North America. These dunes cover an area of about 30 square miles and are estimated to contain over 1.2 cubic miles of sand.
