As the 2024 summer Olympics are now under way in Paris, France, we found an interesting coincidence that would’ve made the 2028 summer Olympics an unprecedented event.
The 2028 summer Olympics has been awarded to and will be held at Los Angeles, California, USA. There were potential bids and considerations for the event to be held in various other countries, including Australia. The cities in Australia included cities like Melbourne and Brisbane, but not Sydney.
What would’ve made the 2028 Olympics special on Australia is the alignment of the start of the games with the 2028 total solar eclipse! Although the cities in Australia that were considering bids were not in the path of totality, it would’ve been a short trip to get to the path of totality, which were in cities like Sydney.
The games typically run for 2 weeks, in late July and in some years, early August. The solar eclipse will occur on July 22nd, 2028, which would not only be right in the middle of the 2028 scheduled events, but also be an opportunity for a sign of unity. Imagine all of the Olympic athletes coming together to watch the eclipse together!! One can imagine a highly rated event for the eclipse. Everyone would have tuned in to create an absolutely enormous experience, but at the same time it would’ve created an absolute crazy tourist experience. It would’ve been so crowded, that it’s almost a good thing for eclipse viewers that it didn’t happen that way. Eclipses have a way of creating bottlenecks and being crazy times without the Olympics at the same time. People would miss out who otherwise would have viewed the eclipse.
But at the same time, nothing else could’ve promoted astronomy and the eclipse experience than having a plethora of athletes watching. Plus for those tourists watching the Olympics would get an eclipse experience that they may have otherwise not have gotten.
